Light Lass

Another commission for Heroes Con. Light Lass from the Legion of Superheroes. Will soon accompany the Phantom Girl from last year. Like PG, I did the Cockrum designed outfit from the 70's that I grew up on,with the nod to her current design with the arrows in the boots, which I thought worked surprisingly well in creating a retro feel. Watercolor and ink, with some photoshop touch-up.

I've always thought that Light Lass wouldn't be all that effective in a fight, what with her powers to make things light as a daisy and all. But she sure is cute!

Don't know this for fact, but I think that Amethyst was DC's attempt to attract young girls to start reading comics in the mid-80's. Some great art by Ernie Colon on the series, especially when he inked himself. One of those artists who captures so much energy in inking their own work.

Little Green Men

Finally getting around to posting this:

Shot from the Little Green Men show at Wootini gallery in Carrboro, NC. My mantids placed nicely between curator Andy Foltz's great epic pieces. The opening was a great success, and much fun was had with most all of the contributors on hand, and a good many Red Storm employees past and present milling about.

Bonus! Good eats from some of the local food trucks that were out and about that night. If I could only remenber the name of the truck serving Grilled Cheese with Guacomole sandwiches, I'd give 'em a plug. Instead, fond memories of a tasty snack/meal.

While not my original intention for this commissioned sketch, this one kind of developed into a strange sort of homage to The Little Mermaid's Ariel. I think it started when the fish on Delirium's string started reminding me of Flounder... I don't know.

Also of note- this was done in a Moleskine watercolor sketchbook, and I loved the feel and texture of the paper. Note to self- get me one of those!

DP 63 Cover

Cover to Doom Patrol No. 63, Grant Morrison's final issue, as well as Crazy Jane and Rebis's. One of my personal favorite issues. From 1992, nearly 20 years now.

Looking back on these reminds me how much building of texture I was really into exploring in my inking work then. Drybrush, litho crayons, spatter and liquid frisket to preserve the white of the paper are all on display here.

Doom Patrol-Who's Who!

Posting my latest DP piece got me all nostalgic to look over some of the old work, some of which I still have in its original state. Thought that it would be interesting to post some of the old stuff while working on more new stuff so that this site didn't sit quite so empty this year like it did this past year.

So, this is the piece I did back in 1991 for Who's Who in the DCU #15. This issue turned out to be the "Vertigo" issue of Who's Who, before there was a separate Vertigo imprint. It featured characters from books like Sandman, Hellblazer, Shade the Changing Man, Swamp Thing, Animal Man and Doom Patrol, that went on later to become the core monthlies that at the time were branded as the "darker" mature titles at DC. Within a year or two the Vertigo imprint was created.

Anyway, I finished this piece just before Heroes Con that year, and knowing that editor Michael Eury was going to attend, brought it along to give him to take back to New York with him. As I handed it to him he thought about the idea of using it for the cover of the issue as well, and sure enough, it was the image that was used.

A 'Case' of Mistaken Identity

It's been an interesting week. Checking my messages on Monday I notice I'd received some comments on my blog. Always nice to see what people are thinking is my thought as I then read some scathing rant about putting down 6 year-olds named Forrest, along with a lot of name-calling. I'm completely dumb-founded as to what this all about, and it comes from a few different sources, so I'm really confused. I try to ignore it, thinking people will just say weird things about my art when given the chance.

Cut to Wednesday, and I get a letter from someone who shows me the link to a letter from a father posted on a forum on CBR, about how I was at a show the previous weekend, and made fun of a six-year old kid. I was floored! Worse, since it'd been up for a few days, a number of people had gotten on the hatin' band-wagon, and my name was being thrown threw the wringer. I immediately wrote to the forum and told my side of the story... First, I hadn't been to any show any time recently. Secondly, I've never even met the other artists named in the letter. Thirdly, and probably most importantly, I would never do the things that were described by this father in his letter.

Shortly thereafter, I started seeing apologies from some of the other posters on the forum. Someone was even able to track down that the event probably happened at a show in Canada, outside of Toronto. One person's blog even said I was at this show. Soon though, it becomes clear that it was Richard PACE that was at the show, not me. By the next day the headline read that I did NOT mock a six-year old, I'd received a letter from Richard explaining his side of what happened at the show, and also received a letter of apology from the owner of the store sponsoring the show for the misunderstanding, which was very kind indeed.

To date, however, I have NOT received a letter of apology from the father, who instigated the whole thing to begin with.

I do find it very disturbing though, to see now first-hand, how quickly one's reputation can be so quickly and wrongly tarnished on the internet. Stories and rumours can be started and passed along so quickly these days, unsubstantiated, that it can make mind blur. In a matter of hours my name was being trashed through at least 2 (that I know of) sites, and I was receiving hate mail, all the while having no clue whatsoever as to what was going on.

So, be careful out there, surfers of the web. Don't believe everything you read, (tempting I know!) and don't be too quick to judge.

Now, time to get off my soapbox, and next time I'll get back to the business of what this blog is supposed to be about: posting sketches.

PS- I do want to thank the number of people that WERE supportive of me through this odd little experience. Definitely made it easier to take!

On the anniversary of a friend's passing

Somehow I missed the anniversary of Mike's passing today. Usually I'm pretty good at remembering dates of significant events, but it just didn't occur to me today. Even this morning when walking around the downtown Hillsborough area where we had our studio and created funny books for all those years- I was thinking of him, but it never dawned on me that today was THAT day.

Of course, since Mike was so beloved in the comics community, there are plenty of reminders out there today, and of course I stumbled across the news. I'm glad and grateful that he's still remembered so fondly, and for a second I worried that, like "how could I have possibly forgotten?" It doesn't mean that I miss my friend any less, I've decided, but rather that I just think more about his life than his death now, these two years later.

I remember I was drawing Tim Hunter's adventures in "The Names of Magic" at the time I did this piece, and I think the woman here reminds me of Iolanthe from that series.

I've always loved looking at other artists partially inked drawings. They're a great insight into the process of creating an image. I've meant to scan more of my own, but often don't even think of it while part way through, and before I know it, I've finished inking it! Anyway, hope to be a better blogger again...

Cedars of January

It's been a pretty busy January but I did manage some sketching time to work up this tree study. I've always loved the way cedar branches twist and break off, especially when coupled with vines of ivy... and in the winter there's not a lot of those pesky leaves to hide the skeletal structure.

Construction of a Dream

Long overdue posting time! Here's a few steps in the creation of a recently completed commission of Dream... Pencils, inks, color rough in photoshop and completed watercolor. I'll be honest, I'm still kind of partial to the rough I did digitally. Was fairly happy with the natural media look that I was able to get with some of the new brushes I've been trying out, and I didn't have to breathe any fumes while sealing it like with the finished painting. What do others think?

Nuala-CBLDF fundraiser

Been a bad blogger of late, very negligent of posting anything new for a while. To get back on track, im announcing that the Nuala piece that I did for the Sandman 20th anniversary poster a few months ago is now available as part of a fundraiser for the CBLDF, along with some of the other originals donated by other illustrators of the series and poster, and even some sketches by Neil Gaiman himself teaming with other artists. The auction is here.

For those who haven't seen the poster available, its also reproduced in the last volume of Absolute Sandman, Vol. 4, just recently released from Vertigo. This is the volume that reproduces the "Kindly Ones" storyline that I contributed inks to, along with "The Wake". Its a beautiful volume, leatherbound with a sturdy slipcover, and nice to see the pages reproduced at such a large size. It also has a lot of the promo art that Marc Hempel did for the Kindly Ones storyline that I hadn't seen in a long time, not to mention some of his layouts and scripts from Neil. Great production. At $99.99 its a hefty price, but its a hefty volume of goodness, and worth every penny.

Send-off to Summer

While its felt like summer's been over for a while, since school started a few weeks ago, it wasn't officially over until just the other day. Seemed to go particularly fast this year for me, but I wanted to capture a slice of it here with a sketch of Kaitlin playing with one of her praying mantis friends. She's befriended quite a number of critters in our yard this summer, but none so much as the mantis. Could it be the millipedes she feeds them? Yum!

20 years of Sandman

An anniversary of a different sort. Sandman's been around for 20 years if you can believe it. Coincidentally, Grant Morrison and my run on Doom Patrol started around the same time, part of DC's push with British writers re-vamping their older characters. But Sandman was different, as Neil Gaiman created a completely new property and mythology, with only some minor ties to DC characters of the past. And of course, as the series progressed, it grew further from those ties, and more entrenched into its own entity.

Along the way, I was blessed with the opportunity to work on the series, to ink Marc Hempel on the Kindly Ones storyline. Definitely one of the highlights of my comics career, as Marc's pencils were just so fun to work on. His amazing sense of design, draughtmanship and use of light and shadow was an inspiration to me already, but even more so when allowed to work over his pencils. A true joy to work on. Not to mention, the story was pretty good too!

Recently, I was asked to pitch in on a poster celebrating Morpheus' 20 years. It's a jam poster with art by various artists that worked on the series over time. It was designed by Mark Buckingham, and then each artist was asked to draw in a particular character. Some real talented folks involved here, an honor to be asked to join them on this.

And here's a close up on Nuala, along with the rough sketch. I was asked to make her look a bit more sour in the final, and yes, those are eyeballs she's serving for the Corinthian to enjoy.

And while I'm looking back, here's a sketch of Nuala I was commissioned to do in a fan's hardcover copy of Kindly Ones, with those great white endpaper that were just begging for cool sketches in white pencils or silver markers...

The Isuzu Rodeo that looks like his that I see near our old studio is being driven by a soccer mom, and when I see some cool comics that I want to share, well, I'm going to imagine he already knows about them before me.

Heroes Con

The Brotherhood of Mike! Craig, Todd, Nick and Matt, displaying their swanky new uniforms. It was great to see these guys together, and seeing everyone get together to help with the 'Ringo scholarship that Matt and Suzanne has started in Mike's name.

Another shot with Jeff Parker and Matt, and is that Chris Kemple talking to these guys? Looks like it is! And Suzanne in the background doing the real work no doubt. :)

Big thanks to everyone who came by the Hero Initiative booth while we were doing the big group signing. I tried to look up and thank everyone, but I know that there were times after a while I was just making sure I was still spelling my name right. So, if I was looking down while you passed by, please know that it was not an attempt to slight you.

Thanks also to those who came by and picked up a new copy of Rhomble #2, and to all who were patient enough to wait while I did sketches for them, especially Billy, Drew and Ed. And of course, to James, who has waited patiently for years (literally) for me to finish a painting of the Endless for him. I'll post a copy of it soon for others to see.

It was great to meet a number of folks for the first time, (Emilio!) and of course to catch up with some old buddies. Nathan, thanks for sharing some space. And of course, big thanks to Shelton for continuing to run the best Comics Show Around!

Mike Tribute

So, this upcoming weekend is Heroes Con. The only convention that I've continued to appear at over these last, gosh, is it really 18 years? The friendliest and most welcoming show I've been to, which is a testament to Shelton Drum and his wonderful crew for putting this show together year after year. Every year its a great experience, reuniting with friends, meeting artists I loved as a kid, and chatting with great fans.

This year of course, there's another aspect to the show that will be apparent throughout the entire weekend. Its the first one since Mike died last year. Because Mike loved this show so much, its been cause for a number of tributes and rememberances to be launched this weekend.
The first is the What If story that Mike was working on at the time of his passing, with a few of Mike's talented friends finishing the story that former Artamus mate Jeff Parker wrote. Along with the story, a few other friends wrote or drew tributes to Mike. Above is mine. I know Todd posted this piece a while ago on his blog site, but I wanted to wait until it was nearly launch time to share it here. For obvious reasons, it was one of the hardest pieces I've ever worked on, because it was so personal, and yet at the same time, I wanted people to read their own personal memories and feelings for Mike into this piece.

When artist Mike Wieringo passed away, he was in the middle of his latest Marvel Comics book, a What If? story. Mike had completed seven pages of what became a massive 27-page story. With Mike’s passing, Marvel Comics generously provided access to the script and Mike’s art to The Hero Initiative, and Mike’s friends stepped up to finish the story, and pay tribute to Mike. Wieringo’s Friends and Family to Host Special Fundraising Booth at Heroes Con

CHARLOTTE, NC (June 6, 2008) When Mike Wieringo abruptly passed away last August, the comics industry lost more than a great artist and creator – it lost a friend. Now, Mike’s family has teamed with the Savannah College of Art and Design to create The Mike Wieringo Scholarship or “The ‘Ringo” to help keep his spirit of generosity alive.

Created by Mike’s brother Matt and his sister-in-law Suzanne, the ‘Ringo is designed to help provide similar help to artists at the Savannah College of Art and Design or SCAD. Domestic and international students with have a minimum 3.0 grade point average who demonstrate financial need and display a serious interest in pursuing comics as a career are eligible. The scholarship will take effect in the artist’s second year of classes, and is renewable for up to two additional years, provided the student continues to meet the criteria.

The recipient will be chosen from three finalists determined by the college in a portfolio review by Matt and Suzanne Wieringo, along with a rotating group. The ultimate goal for the ‘Ringo is to raise enough funds so that it can cover a full year’s expenses at SCAD, approximately $30,000.

Toward this end, a table staffed by Mike’s family and friends will be set up in his traditional spot in Artists Alley at Heroes Con in Charlotte, NC. Heroes was a big part of Mike's life and career, and was the industry event he most looked forward to every year.

The table will raise funds through donations and the sale of remaining copies of Mike’s sketchbooks, copies of comics featuring Mike's work, selected pieces of Mike's original artwork, sketches by Mike's friends in the industry who will be appearing at the booth, and items donated by other comic professionals. Pros appearing include Jeff Parker, Rich Faber, Craig Rousseau, Todd Dezago, Mark Waid, Richard Case and more to be announced.

“SCAD is one of the most impressive programs in the world to focus on the medium of comics,” says Jeff Parker, creator of The Interman and Agents of Atlas, who worked with Mike at Artamus Studios. “I'm pretty sure Mike would have loved to have attended such a place in his student days. It would make an excellent legacy for him if we can grow the Ringo scholarship into a launch pad for the future greats of comics.”

Despite his success on such books as The Flash, Fantastic Four and his own creator-owned Tellos, Mike Wieringo never forgot what it was like to be a struggling creator. For many up-and-comers, Mike served as a mentor and friendly voice, whether it was providing free covers, advice, or just the encouragement to keep going.

With your help, the Mike Wieringo Scholarship can continue to grow and help a new generation of creators get the training and connections they need to start their careers. Mike’s talent, enthusiasm and generosity inspired many in the comics industry to be their best as both creators and as human beings. Perhapanauts 2

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that Perhapanauts 2 came out a week or two ago, so if you haven't run out and picked up a copy, do so this week (if your local shoppe still has copies, that is..) I did a short back up story, but of course the real reason to buy is for the other-worldly goodness that Todd and Craig bring to the table EVERY MONTH!

Here's a look at both roughs and finishes of one of my pages. Different technique for me in laying out this page, as I worked up the gestural sketches right on the script, and put the pages together in photoshop before transferring them onto boards and inking them up.

Sisters and Brothers

Evidence that while my kids tend to get along pretty well with each other, they do have their moments! My favorite part about this list was how it grew by a couple of items every day throughout the week. With each new day, I laughed uncontrollably at the new entries. Maybe I'm just easily entertained.

Keep in mind Brendan (the author) is 13 and Kaitlin ( the culprit) is 7.

Camping in the Mountains

Recently went camping with my son's class trip, and was determined to do a little bit of painting while in the beautiful mountains of Virginia. In addition to the more typical activities that the class did while camping such as canoeing, caving, cooking and playing frisbee, I lead the class in a sketching from nature session. I pointed out to the group of 7th graders the idea that they'll remember some of the visuals of the trip if they take the time to really study the details in drawing it that one doesn't necessarily get by taking photos. It was interesting in reviewing the drawings afterward that each artist chose different areas of the same landscape to draw as well as the far range of styles that emerged in using the same materials.

Also, adding one of my favorite visuals from the trip, the cooking of the shoes ritual that took place after the creek walk where we did our part to clean up the park, picking up trash and recyclables that had found there way into the creek and adjoining banks. Was thrilled to see the enthusiasm that these kids showed in cleaning up the area, and the teamwork they employed in getting trashbags that were overfilled back to base.

Lookee here, at some of the 50 (count 'em) Marvel Masterworks cards I recently finished. These are some of the original art cards that will be slipped into the occasional pack o' cards. Good luck finding them! These were fun to do, drawing some of my favorite Marvel characters for the first time since I was a kid, and others just to revisit since I last drew them professionally. I'll probably post some more of them in the near future... and eventually post them all once they've been published.

BTW, I decided to leave all the pencil lines, unerased, to preserve the "sketchiness" of the sketch card concept. What do others think? Did I do the right thing?

A bit late for this sketch, as it was meant more for the beginning of spring, but better late than never, and after all, the blossoms are still falling from the trees as they begin to leaf out...

Also, been a while since I just posted a sketch, rather than more finished pieces. I need to remember that part of the point of starting this blog was to post sketches, in all their raw unfinished form. Personally, I enjoy looking at other artists sketch process, so this is just my way of paying it forward, for those that are innerested in that sort of thang.

Been far too long since my last post, but finally finished tweaking the recolored version of this Dryad in all her GREEN glory. Which in a way, makes sense to wait until March, the month of green, what with St. Patty's day coming up as well as the spring season. Already the grass is looking a lot greener than it did just a week ago. And while it's been a fairly mild winter here in the Carolinas, I'm still anxiously looking forward to spring. (Still hopeful that someday it will though :) For those not familiar with the story, it has a lot of similarities to Snow White and Briar Rose as I recall, complete with the evil mother and some other story details. Sketch and final for an illustration of a Brothers Grimm tale, "The White Bride and the Black One", that I did a couple of years ago. I just did a bit of retouch on the final version though, as it seemed far too light after looking at it again. The contrast works much better now. Another plus for Photoshop, using it with natural media, in this case watercolor, to improve the piece very simply. If I were to try and darken the shadows in watercolor, I would have a tougher time keeping the blending consistent. My hope though, is that it still reads as watercolor glazes. Be curious to hear others thoughts...

Took advantage of some unseasonably warm weather to do some plein air painting today with fellow concept artist Andrew Bosley. We've both been inspired by the posts of James Gurney and his ongoing discussions about painting theory. Today we both independently challenged ourselves in using limited palettes of color, in the attempt to better harmonize the overall tone of the painting. I've also been trying to get a bit bolder with the opaque quality of the gouache that I've been using, often falling back to much on the transparencies of watercolor. I was reasonably happy with the results, and certainly enjoyed the break of staring into a computer monitor for an hour.

Nostalgia for old characters that I loved in my youth has brought me to some of the Legion of Superheroes from the 70s, along with the way out fashions they were famous for, mostly the work of Dave Cockrum.

I loved these stories as a kid, and the costumes seemed so modern, so NOW! at the time... Now of course, they serve as a great time capsule. But then, so does anything from a certain time period that hopes to envision the future. Who know? Maybe the kids really will dress like this in the 30th century.

Here, of course, is the Delightful Duo Damsel, gossiping with herself, probably about Bouncing Boy's weight or some such... you can fill in the gaps, yes, you.

The first of many I've got planned... we'll see how many come into fruition.

Another concept for a map that didn't make it, but this was one of the first ones that I remember stretching the canvas from my original drawing to change the composition. The whole right third was added later in Photoshop, because I wanted to show where the bridge led to. By this time I'd learned to start making custom leaf brushes to quickly create jungle foliage.

Slightly older sketch where I was trying to show a bit of the diversity of color in what some of the buildings in an old Mexican town might have, along with some of the stuff you'd find on the streets that help instill life into it, without actually having to put people in.

Normal turnaround time on concepts like these are 1-2 days.

I haven't been sure how I would try to get back to posting stuff that wasn't Mike related; none of my drawings seemed to be the appropriate place to start back. Then the idea came to me while looking at one of Kaitlin's recent drawings that our kids literally are our future, and what better way to look into my future than by posting one of her drawings that brings a smile to my face. For those that can't tell, she's riding on a horse (or is it a unicorn?), while bending over to take a look out at us. I love the foreshortening, and the way she captured her hair, and her happy expression that she captured with just a few lines. It makes it easier to find hope again... at least for me.

Flashback Friday (Todd Sauce)

The way I remember it, Mike, Chuck, Dave Johnson and myself were flying up to a con in Chicago when for reasons beyond our comprehension, we had an unscheduled landing in Indianapolis (I think we later found out there was snow coming down in Chicago and a huge holding pattern and we didn't want to run out of fuel.) We sat on the tarmac in Indy for well over an hour, not allowed to exit the plane, knowing that we were going to be late for the opening of the show. I started sketching in my sketchbook while waiting (planes are great places to sketch btw) and Mike and I started joking about how Todd was already there at the show, waiting for us to show, bored out of his skull. Because, you know, there was no way Todd could be enjoying himself without us there... :)

Now, I believe this was just after Tellos first shipped, and I think maybe Mike had a bunch of copies he was bringing along to sell, (Todd- help me here...) which would explain why there aren't any copies of the book sitting there in the drawing. Anyway, Mike bummed my sketchbook, and while sitting there in the back of the plane, whipped this drawing up, complete with Todd's little buddies waiting for him at home. Mike even captured the way Todd drew his pets himself (not many know that Todd is a talented artist in his own right).

The explanation of the Todd Sauce is harder to explain. Somewhere along the line Mike and I started this stupid bit when Todd called that went something like "Still talking 'bout the Todd Sauce..." I don't know how we started that one, but like so many ridiculous expressions, Mike and I ran it into the ground. So, when Mike drew the drool in this pic, naturally it got the Todd Sauce label.

Todd's memory of this might be a tad different than mine...

The one other memorable part of this trip (I think it was the same trip) was that we met Sonny Shroyer, who played Enos on the Dukes of Hazzard show, in the back of the shuttle bus on the way back to the airport after the show. He told us some great stories about the show and Roscoe P. Coltrane (James Best) and we all got our picture taken with him before running off to catch our respective planes. Dave's got the picture to prove it, if we're lucky...

Such is the strangeness of comics shows.

Was originally going to post these last week, but they just didn't seem to match with the things I was writing, my memories of Mike and how great a guy he was. I did bring them to his memorial though, and afterwards, sharing stories in the pub, passed them around. We all got a good laugh out of them. Mike was such a character anyway, and here he is in character, posing as a bum for me to use for the Preacher Special starring Arseface, along with Casey Jones. Note that Mike's using a lead pointer as a crack pipe here...

More Memoirs of Mike

These are the last two images I inked of Mike's pencils, done a couple of years back now. The latter one with Supergirl is my favorite of anything I ever inked of his, the one where I most closely got to "nailing" it, at least in my mind.

It had been a few years since I 'd inked some of his work when I worked on these, and it quickly came back as to what a pleasure inking Mike's stuff was. His pencils were so tight and fluid, and had so much character to them. I wish I had copies of the pencils themselves to post alongside the inks.

These were done for our friend Wally who we'd played softball with years ago, and who would still come out to visit us in the waning days of the studio to see what we'd been up to, and to go enjoy some awesome jambal-AYAHHH! with at Tupelo's in Hillsborough. Memories we both shared at Mike's memorial service last Friday.

Speaking of... it was great to see everyone who could make it to the memorial. It seemed to help, getting together to remember Mike, and to share some of the ridiculous and moving stories that we all had of him. My thoughts and prayers continue to turn toward his parents, Matt, Suzanne, and to Todd.

Remembering Mike

I'm one of the lucky ones. I had the great opportunity to work with Mike day after day for nearly 10 years, to see him grow into the great artist he became, and to become the best of friends.

He was always so encouraging, always giving other artists a boost, or giving the kind of great constructive criticism that made you want to make it work. Because he loved the art of comics so much, and really appreciated when the efforts paid off. Here's a sample email from Mike, after I started working at Red Storm but was still finishing comics commitments by night, and we were like ships passing at the studio, checking out what we'd done during the other's shift...

I checked out the page you did yesterday--

Man, it's really awesome...! I know you already had the layout done, but
did you trace that entire thing up in the brief time you were here
yesterday? If so, that's really impressive. I love all the added texture
and lighting you added from the simple layout you had.

I'm starting to really enjoy -- (although I still don't LOVE the work I'm
producing I don't HATE it like a lot of the stuff I've done in past)--
working really quickly. Not laboring over things and drawing them in a
quick and gestural manner seems to help bring out stuff that I never did
before.

That's what I see in what you're doing too. Is it because we're older and
wiser...? Or we just don't give as much of a shit anymore...?

Mike

We used to talk about stuff like this all the time. Talked at length about artists work we'd just discovered who embodied the energy and comprehension that really made a comics page sing.

I was lucky too, to have had the opportunity to ink Mike on his run of Sensational Spidey, and to meet and befriend Todd along the way. Mike made inking a pure joy, every line made for a reason, full of energy and character. To capture such personality with so few lines is deceptively tough, but Mike made it seem so easy. I think largely due to the fact that he was so empathetic, so compassionate, and had such a great feeling for the dramatic.

His compassion for animals is well known, by any that read his blog. His love and dedication to his cats. But also to all animals. The reason he chose to stop eating meat, was more a decision about why no animal should suffer for him to sustain himself, than it was about health reasons. In the last couple of years at Artamus, one of the other tenants would sometimes bring her dog Moe upstairs. This quickly became a highlight to our day, when we heard the tippy-tap of dog feet on wood flooring, and we'd yell out "Moe-bus!" as he stuck his head in our door. Mike always had a bag of treats for him, and he'd hang out with us for part of the day. And when my dog Nugget died, you'd have thought it was Mike's dog that died that day.

I know its a cliche, and I've heard many people say this this past week, but he was like a brother to me. We had our own short-hand language, catch phrases we'd repeat ad infinitum that just got funnier with each repetition (at least to us it did). We would listen to books on tape together, our stories, and sure enough there'd be another expression that would become part of our repertoire. If we were working on Sunday we'd listen to the Panthers games, and I'm glad he finally made it down to Charlotte to see one live. I watched Super Bowl 38 with him at his house, thinking it would be just another boring Super Bowl except for the commercials, and wound up watching the most exciting one as the Panthers and Patriots bounced back and forth in the 2nd half before Vinatiri ended our dreams of a Carolina win.

Its amazing how many brothers Mike had in this way, and its a true testament to him.

Mike was there to see my kids when they were a few days old, to see them grow up and was always happy to see and joke around with them.

He was the one that called me at the studio the morning of 9/11, and we watched the towers fall on my little b/w tv, filled with disbelief, anger and shock.

Which is how I've felt most of this past week. Still can't process that he's gone. Angry because I want to understand how it could happen, but it doesn't change the fact that he's not just a phone call or drive down the road away.

We're all gonna miss you, Mike.

Mike Wieringo, 1963-2007

I can't even believe I'm typing the above words. Doesn't seem possible that Mike's no longer with us. He was like the art brother I never had, working side by side each other for nearly 10 years, someone who could give me honest feedback, and be so encouraging. There are few people that I've been as close to, that we had our own short-hand language and catch phrases that would start us down a whole line of tangents before bringing a conversation back 'round to what we were talking about in the first place. Few people could make me laugh like Mike could, and I'm sorry that more people couldn't have known that side of him. He was one of the most generous and compassionate souls that I've ever met.

Godspeed, Mites! We'll miss you buddy.

Sketch started while waiting for midnight at the countdown for the Deadly Hallows at the local Barnes and Noble that I took my son Brendan to. Was quite fun watching all the hoopla over the release of a book. This particular fellow looked a bit out of place with plastic Potter glasses on and his frappaccino, which was good enough a reason for me to draw him. The owls were there too, though under much tighter supervision than I depict them.

First chance I've had to post after the fun that was Heroes Con this year, as I took the family to Atlanta to check out the World's Largest Aquarium in the form of the Georgia Aquarium. Definitely worth the trip! Whale sharks(the only ones in the States), Beluga whales, hammerheads, cow-nosed rays, loggerhead turtles... we saw 'em all and about a million more.

Anyway, thanks to all those who purhcased a copy of Rhomble at the show. Was great fun hanging out with everyone, and catching up with old friends. Had some great down-home cookin' with me old studio-mates Jeff Parker, Casey Jones, Scott Hampton and Chris Kemple. Good times. Caught up with old pal and Doom Patrol inker Mark McKenna as well. It was Mark that encouraged me all those years ago to start trying out inking other pencillers to see if it would take while he was working on a Kelley Jones fill-in for DP. Looking forward to next year's show already!

A Strange 20 years

I realized the other day that this spring marks the 20th year anniversary of me landing my first professional comics gig, pencilling a story of one of my favorite characters, Dr. Strange. One of those moments that I'll always remember, painting the bedroom of the house my girlfriend (and future wife) was renting when the phone rang. Carl Potts was on the line, and wondering if I'd be interested in pencilling an 11 page fill-in featuring the good Doctor for an issue of Stange Tales. I tried to keep my cool, and sound professional in my response, but as soon as I was off the phone I couldn't contain my excitement and call friends to let them know I got this awesome gig.

So, in remembrance of that moment, here's a new rendition of the Doctor. It's been a strange 20 years.

Another sketch I did a while back in my sketchbook, and recently painted up in Photoshop. Created a custom "scale" brush for the dragon's scales that saved lots 'o inking time.

Not totally happy with the composition, largely the result of it being just a sketch and running out of room, so the cropping seems awkward to me, but it is what it is in the end, a sketch.

Was asked recently to do a sketch of Spider-Man for a friend who works with Clubs in the City and Building Together Ministries- Christian, non-profit organizations that serve in Raleigh's inner city. Their After School Academy provides after school care for children in grades k-5th. In this cool program the kids get to participate in various arts activities- visual arts, dance, and music in addition to getting help with homework & tutoring. It turns out her most disruptive student is a big comics fan, so hopefully Spidey here can help in keeping the peace.
